What is a Cataract ?

A cataract is an eye disease caused by the clouding of the natural lens located behind the pupil. Patients with cataracts see the world as if they are looking through a fogged-up window.

How is it Treated ?

The only known and effective treatment for cataracts is surgical intervention; there is no medication for it. The surgery takes approximately 10 minutes and is performed under topical (drop) anesthesia to remove the cataract.

Why Do We Help ?

In Asia and Africa, at least half of the millions of people with visual impairments are cataract patients. However, the rate of those who can receive treatment is only 500 out of 1 million people.

In countries such as Niger, Chad, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia—located particularly along the Sahel belt—there is only one doctor for every 40,000 people. Millions of people pass away without ever seeing a doctor in their lifetime. About 1.2% of Africa's population (approximately 10 million people) is visually impaired, and the primary cause is cataracts. For our brothers and sisters living below the poverty line, the surgeries performed by Deniz Feneri are of vital importance. Through these cataract surgeries, we bring hope to those in need.

Providing financial support to the cataract campaign is easy, and the costs are not high. With a donation of 4,000 TL (€75), you can ensure that one person looks at the world again with sighted eyes. Our association uses these collected donations to perform mass surgeries in the relevant countries, opening the eyes of hundreds of people at once.
