What is Cataract?

Cataract is an eye disease that occurs when the lens located behind the pupil, which enables vision, loses its transparency and becomes cloudy.

Individuals with this disease see the world as if they are looking through a fogged-up glass. Over time, this condition can progress to total vision loss.

How is Cataract Treated?

The only and definitive treatment method for cataracts is surgery.

There is no medical treatment with drugs. However, with a simple operation lasting approximately 10 minutes performed under drop anesthesia, patients can see healthily again.

This surgery, which is a routine procedure in developed countries, has unfortunately become an inaccessible opportunity for millions living in poor regions.

Why is This Project So Important?

At least half of the millions of visually impaired people in Asia and Africa are cataract patients. However, the rate of access to treatment for these patients is extremely low:
Only 500 people out of 1 million can have surgery.

Especially in countries located in the Sahel region such as;

• Niger
• Chad
• Mali
• Burkina Faso
• Ethiopia

there is only 1 doctor for every 40,000 people on average.

Approximately 1.2% of the African population (10 million people) is visually impaired, and cataracts are one of the biggest causes of this situation.

For this reason, the cataract surgeries performed by Deniz Feneri Association are not just a health service; they are also a humanitarian responsibility and a project of hope.
