What is Fidya?

Fidya is a religious financial obligation paid in cases where certain acts of worship cannot be performed or are performed with deficiencies. Regarding acts of worship, Fidya applies specifically to fasting and Hajj. A person who cannot fast due to old age or an incurable illness and is unable to make up those fasts later must pay Fidya for each day they cannot fast. In the Holy Quran, it is stated: “And for those who can fast with difficulty, they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a poor person (for every day)” (Al-Baqarah, 2/184).

A person who is obligated to pay Fidya but lacks the financial means should seek forgiveness from Allah. Elderly or ill individuals who cannot fast during long days but are able to fast during short days must make up their fasts during those shorter days. In such cases, any Fidya previously paid is considered Sadaqah (voluntary charity). Ramadan Fidya can be paid as a lump sum at the end of the month, daily during the month, or at the very beginning of Ramadan.

To whom can Fidya NOT be given?

Ramadan Fidya can be given to those eligible for Zakat. This means a person cannot give Fidya to their own grandchildren or children. Additionally, it is not permissible to give it to grandparents, parents, a spouse, or non-Muslims. However, if in-laws (mother/father-in-law, daughter/son-in-law), stepchildren, or brothers-in-law are poor, Fidya can be given to them. Giving it to blood relatives like aunts and uncles is considered more virtuous. According to the Imamayn (Imam Abu Yusuf and Imam Muhammad, the two great students of Imam Abu Hanifa), it is permissible for a woman to give her Fidya to her husband if he is in debt and poor.
