What is Fidya? (The Religious Obligation)

Fidya is a religious and financial obligation paid in cases where certain acts of worship cannot be performed or when specific errors occur during their performance. In Islamic jurisprudence, Fidya primarily applies to Fasting (Sawm) and Hajj.

Individuals who are unable to fast due to old age or a chronic illness with no hope of recovery—and who will not be able to make up the fasts later—must pay Fidya for each day missed. The Holy Quran states:

"And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]." (Al-Baqarah, 2/184)

Key Rules of Fidya:

• Inability to Pay: Those obligated to pay Fidya but lacking the financial means should seek forgiveness from Allah.
