Adak Sacrifice

In our religion, it is obligatory for a Muslim who vows to perform a sacrifice to offer an adak sacrifice. If an individual has linked their vow to the fulfillment of a condition or event, they are required to perform the sacrifice once that condition is fulfilled. The distinction between an adak sacrifice and one performed during Eid al-Adha lies in this: the sacrifice during Eid al-Adha is a religious duty, whereas adak is an animal sacrificed for the sake of Allah upon the fulfillment of a condition or an event.

Can Adak Sacrifice Be Eaten?

The sacrifice made as an adak donation should be slaughtered for donation purposes. The meat of an adak sacrifice cannot be consumed by the one who dedicated it, their parents, children, or grandchildren. Additionally, it cannot be given to wealthy individuals. If the person who made the vow wishes to consume it or feed any of those mentioned, they must weigh the sacrifice's meat and give its market value to the poor.

Akika Sacrifice

It is a token of gratitude to Allah for a child's birth in the early days. It is narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) sacrificed a goat for his grandsons, Hz. Hasan and Hz. Huseyin, as stated by Hz. Aisha. (Tecrid-i Sarih Translation, Volume 11, p. 401)

Though the Akika sacrifice can be performed from the day of the child's birth until they reach adulthood, it is deemed appropriate to perform it on the seventh day after birth. According to the Hanafi school, performing the Akika sacrifice (also known as nesike) is recommended.

Thanksgiving (shukr) Sacrifice

An individual may perform a thanksgiving sacrifice upon achieving a desired goal or receiving a blessing. However, unless the person made a vow, it is not mandatory to perform a sacrifice for the blessings received.

Additionally, according to the Hanafi school, individuals who perform temettu or kiran hajj, due to performing Hajj and Umrah together in the same season in the Haremeyn region, the sacrifice they offer there is a form of thanksgiving sacrifice. The person who initiated the sacrifice and their close relatives can consume the meat of the thanksgiving sacrifice.
