WHAT IS CHARITY?
All acts of kindness, both material and spiritual, done for the sake of Allah, fall within the scope of charity. Therefore, besides giving money, a smile is also considered charity. Besides the obligatory alms of zakat, acts of goodness and charity have also been considered as charity. Charity should be given from clean and halal earned goods/money. Charity should not be given from illegally obtained goods or money.
Furthermore, the most important aspect of charity is sincerity, which is known as ihlas in Arabic. Just as our ancestors said, 'Let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing.' Charity should be given in secret, with sincerity, without any desire to show-off
HOW MANY TYPES OF CHARITY ARE THERE?
There are 4 types of charity:
Obligatory charity: This is zakat.
Fitr charity: Charity of alms, a compulsory charity that every Muslim must give. It is given during the month of Ramadan and is also called fitr.
Voluntary charities: These are acts of charity given by a person with the intention to seek the pleasure of our Lord. Every good thing done for the sake of Allah is considered charity.
Sadakat Jaria(ongoing charity): This is a charity that earns reward for us in the hereafter, Ongoing charity includes acts such as building mosques, roads, planting trees, building wells, leaving beneficial educational works, and any other helpful deeds for people.
WHO GIVES CHARITY?
As charity is not just about material things (doing good, good-humored, greeting, etc.), it applies to everyone. However, in our society, since mostly material/money is seen as charity, it is recommended for anyone who has the means to give charity. Especially those who have reached a certain level of wealth, besides giving alms, giving charity is recommended, and there are numerous verses and hadiths emphasizing this point.
WHO CAN RECEIVE CHARITY?
One day, Amr b. Cumuh, one of the rich companions, asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), 'Who should I give charity to, O Messenger of Allah?' Upon this, Chapter 2, Verse 215 of the Quran was revealed: 'They ask you, [O Muhammad], what they should spend. Say, 'Whatever you spend of good is [to be] for parents and relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveler. And whatever you do of good - indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.'' Thus, the priority for charity recipients is needy parents and relatives, followed by orphans, the poor, stranded travelers, the distressed, and the oppressed
